Nowadays, it feels like there are millions of websites and social media platforms that you’re signing up for. It can be hard to track all of them. Thankfully, there are online products you can use to help sort the mess.
Sydney, Australia-based tech startup Linktree has been helping businesses effectively manage links to their off-site content since 2016. The company offers one of the most popular solutions to Instagram’s lack of hyperlinks in posts, and its app is used by a much successful business brand website and social media. Linktree not only points followers in the direction of your choosing to your other social profiles, eCommerce store, or content you want to share. But it helps hold followers within your online ecosystem for longer. It allows users to share more, sells more, create more, and grow more. Linktree provides users with a single link to compile all their social media accounts, websites, blogs, and more.
This Linktree review is the first in our series on our favorite marketing tools. We’re simply on a mission to spread the word about useful tools and to help small businesses find what they need to grow. Without further ado, let’s take an in-depth look at Linktree and how it may be able to help your business achieve its goals.
Linktree is an ingenious solution to Instagram’s policy of not allowing hyperlinks in posts. The concept is simple: you get a short link to place in your bio that, when clicked, navigates to a webpage with a list of every link that you want active. From there, your audience can choose one and get directed to the content they’re looking for.
For example, let’s say km.electric Electrical Services and you posted two blogs in the last week: one for km.electric Emergency Electrician Sydney and Commercial Electrician. Without a product like Linktree, you’d have to say “link to electrical services in bio” on each post, and then decide which services to feature in your bio. With Linktree, you only need one link. When a user clicks that link, they’ll be presented with links to both electrical services, like so:
On the links page, you can see your lifetime page views and how many people clicked each link. All in all, the free plan gets the job done, but the lack of customization options makes it a poor choice for businesses. If you’re lucky, and your branding fits one of the nine free color schemes, you may be able to make it work, but you’ll still have to deal with the Linktree watermark at the bottom of the screen.
You might be wondering what all of this link-in bio stuff is about. We’re here to help! In this article we’ll look at how to link in Instagram, discuss bio link tools and show you how to add a link to Instagram Stories.

A bio link is the part of your profile that contains a link to a website, allowing curious visitors to find out more. On Instagram, you can change your bio link by clicking on your profile then select ‘Edit Profile. The next view you see has an option for ‘Website’. This is where your bio link goes. Check it works by heading back to your profile and clicking it. Underneath ‘Website’ you’ll see another box called ‘Bio’. You’d think this is where your bio link goes, but actually, this box is for a line of text either something about what you do, who you are or you can just use it to say “Find out more here:” and it will display above your bio link.
To find someone else’s bio, you can either click on their name above a post in your feed or search for them. Once you’re on their Instagram profile you’ll see the bio link in the top third of the screen.
Growing your audience can often mean growing your side hustle, but it can be a slow game getting to the kinds of follower numbers that show you mean business Linktree side-hustlers and doers for their follower growth tips. And before we share, just remember that it isn’t really the size of the audience that matters most instead your goal should be to have a highly engaged audience that is a meaningful community for your own niche. Even brands are keener than ever to work with micro-influencers, knowing that the true power is in the relevancy of authentic connections. So don’t pursue growth at any price make sure you’re growing in a meaningful way and not selling out to the follower figures!
With that said, here are some excellent ways to grow your network smartly!
Regardless of whether you’re growing a business brand or a personal brand, these days online audiences are too sophisticated to give them anything but the real deal. The closer that your ‘online voice’ is to your real voice, the more compelling it will be. This doesn’t have to mean total transparency, but do talk about the things you’re passionate about, respond to people in the same way you would offline.
Working with other individuals, organisations, and brands in your space is a great way to grow your audience in a meaningful way. Share each other’s content and help each other grow, which can mean anything from following them, liking their posts, and writing encouraging comments, to sharing their content in your Stories and directing your followers to their Linktree.
You might even work out a way to collaborate. Do they make a complimentary product? Why not combine resources for a joint photoshoot? What about co-authoring an article, launching a collaborative competition, or hosting a meet-up together? Get creative!
The best way to get people to want to keep returning to you is to create something that helps them. Think about ways your content can be useful to those who see it. Can you create informative videos? Have you got advice, tips, or stories on a specific topic? Does your expertise mean you could create downloadable resources to help others in your field?
Once you’re following others in your community, you might notice them posting content that is directly relevant to your cause. Don’t be afraid to re-share it! Sharing their content (UGC) User Generated Content will help create more of a community feel and it’s this ‘club’ vibe that makes others want in. Perhaps it’s people wearing the t-shirt you sell or taking selfies in your store mirror. But you don’t have to sell a product to make this approach work.
Does your niche centre around an activity? A viewpoint or belief? Perhaps a specific location or geography. You can always find like-minded people, whether you’re a fruit and veg stall or a lover of long-distance hikes.
Talk to your followers! “responding to the community’s questions is a great way to be out there and helpful to others.” Go get social by replying to your followers’ comments, ask for their opinions, try polls in Stories to get to know them better, and encourage them to follow you across your other platforms. You can link to all of your social platforms in Linktree so that you only have to point them to one link.
Get tagging! This is such a great way to tap into potential followers who care about the same topics, places, and brands as you. There are three tag types you need:
Hashtags – do your research here for the most relevant hashtag in your community, with the highest amount of followers. The more specific you go, the more targeted those viewers will be. And create your own hashtag, to help with your UGC and grow a sense of ‘tribe’. Ours is #domore because our audience is a bunch of doers.
Geotag – use location tags on your posts and in your Stories. It will make you discoverable to people searching for those places and to others in your neighborhood.
Tag other accounts – tag other people to credit their work, draw their attention to things they’ll like, and make the products in your imagery discoverable. If you do this with the ‘useful content’ mantra in mind, it shouldn’t ever get spammy.
Get yourself into a content rhythm that your audience gets to know – “being consistent on publishing interesting content is the best way to grow your audience”. If Thursday is the day you publish your newsletter, stick to it. If you take a lighthearted approach to Stories on Mondays, make it regular. It helps your audience know what they’re getting and where to find it.
If you’re looking to get profesh, you could even plan out a content calendar, with themes and content types throughout the month!
If your posts in the feed aren’t getting much traction, why not experiment with a range of content types? Within Instagram why not give IGTV a go, or experiment with different Stories formats?
And you don’t need to feel like Instagram is the only place your audience count matters. Our community uses Linktree for all kinds of ways to reach their audience, whether that’s growing their email newsletter lists, creating YouTube content, Facebook groups, launching podcasts, curating playlists on Spotify or Whatsapp groups.
So, now that you know how advantage Linktree needs your business brand, how did we find the experience overall?
Linktree is probably most useful for businesses that aren’t constantly posting new content but want a way to link to different services or easily filter queries. For example, if you run a restaurant, you could have one link to your menu, another to a Google maps page, and another for online ordering. If you’re a musician, you could use Linktree to link to your latest single on any number of different streaming services.
Overall, if you’re constantly posting new content, you may want to find another option that uses image-based navigation to make things easier for your audience.
Linktree’s a smart method of increasing the targeted traffic that you need for your business account on Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and various other social media platforms. What we like about Linktree is exceedingly generous with the privileges it provides to its users, like small businesses.
