Nimbin, New South Wales. A tiny Northern Rivers town with a big, big reputation.

How many tens of thousands of times has it shown up on social media? Do any of them not mention the weed? In same way that Sydney consists of more than the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Bondi beach, there is more to Nimbin than influencers care to explore, or verify. Even the idea that it is a place of “no laws” has been flung around like a cruelly captured chimp and its own excreta. 

Indeed, it is a town like no other. 

As was Byron Bay. And the lovely ‘biggest little town’ of Mullumbimby. 

They are, of course, two towns of many that have undergone incremental and sustainable change since being founded in the late 19th century. 

However, it has been within the last decade, thanks to overexposure, Airbnb, cashed-up Covid refugees and the ability to work from home, that both have rapidly become calcium carbonate structures of their former selves. See what I did there? That’s the style of social media that has lead to the ruination of these once beautifully small, well-functioning communities. True locals  –  much less affluent  –  with histories in these places that stretch further than eco-conscious luxe yoga wear, have been completely priced out of living where their entire life was centred.

If an influencer is going to have a story, it should be big or not at all. It’s an obligation that so many ignore. When feed posts and TikToks are nothing but marketing it’s a dull disservice. Fortunately, also utterly forgettable. There is no meaning, no inspiration. Devoid of education and elucidation, interesting questions remain sitting in the dark. 

Like why the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales doesn’t continually deal with more pressing issues than the property development rejections by Byron Shire Council of the volcanically or vaguely rich and famous. It’s arrogant insistence that brings multi-millionaires by the half-baked dozen to plead their case for their right to build multi-million dollar, compound-style houses from here to infinity and their pools; because living by the beach means too much water is not enough. 

The first slice of paradise slicing started in the 1990s when Hoges, Strop and Delvene had float of snapping handbags brimming with lobsters and pineapples from the enormous, international success of Crocodile Dundee.

The late John Cornell, and his wife Delvene Delaney were generous donors to community causes from that very beginning. Sponsoring everything from environmental initiatives to soccer clubs, schools and short story competitions, the money they continued to make over decades is strongly attached to the enormous amount that was quietly and industriously given back. Stemming from the authenticity of being good, decent Aussies, they are highly regarded and much loved by locals for their generosity, and the significant on-going and positive changes that remain their legacy. 

It’s hard to say whether that mantle has ever been taken up by the raft of actors, hacktors and owners of family property trusts that have spread like too much Vegemite on a once deliciously good bit of toast.

Known for attracting Indigenous and other artists, musicians, writers, creatives, and alternative therapists  rather than lime green Lamborghini Huracán STO lovers, Nimbin holds its own unique place in Australia’s cultural landscape. Its bohemian spirit, vibrant art scene, and enduring countercultural identity is more than symbolic of Australia’s alternative lifestyle  –  it absolutely is it. 

Nestled in the lush, rolling hills of the Nightcap Range, everything in Nimbin is brightly coloured. The people, the shop fronts; even the bins. Overridingly, it is a friendly, happy place  –  and not just because of the easy availability of every hemp product you can think of. 

Nimbin is honest. It doesn’t have any more mental health, or substance abuse issues per capita than anywhere else. The difference with its small population is that it’s a town that knows the names of people and the difficulties they’re dealing with. Rather than judging them or forcing them to the fringes, it strives to offer the space and connection that all humans crave. 

With a town of under 2,500 and a district population that services a wider 7,000 most are working on their farms, in their studios, or volunteering for the many, many community organisations and festivals that  genuinely reflect its diversity. It is a place of acceptance, belonging and healing. 

It always was, and always will be the traditional lands of the Widjabul Wia-bul people of the Bundjalung nation Understandably, it’s a large part of its very strong and supportive local community.

Of great cultural significance is Nimbin Rocks  –  located a mere 11 kilometres south of the town, and a visual glory from both the Lismore and Kyogle approaches to the town. Standing for maybe 40 million years after the Mount Warning volcanic eruption 20 kilometres to the north-east, these jagged outcrops evoke the feeling of sentient sentinel, gracefully watching over the land and those upon it. 

Once an important part of Bundjalung initiation ceremonies, this sacred men’s site is the home of the Nyimbunji or ‘Clever Men’ and the source of Nimbin’s name. Related in spirit and geology is Lilian Rock, 15 minutes north of Nimbin, and a Bundjalung nation landmark for sacred women’s business.

As part of the rapid logging of the soft, buoyant and valuable timber of Australian red cedar, European settlers arrived in the 1840s. Referred to as ‘red gold’ with the drive for it likened to the gold rush, it was valued for its rich, deep lustre, and durability in shipbuilding, construction, panelling and furniture making. Demand for it was high. So much so, the entire species of Toona australis had considerably diminished by 1870, and almost wiped out in the first hundred years of colonisation.

Farmers moved in after all the trees had been moved out. Then, the essence of the Aquarius Festival of 1973 had Nimbin turn from rural to radical. 

It was the first time in history that the staunch determination of the counterculture banded together to stand up against industrial logging to protect the Big Scrub rainforest from the New South Wales Forestry Commission. (A misnomer if ever there was one.) The region’s rare and valuable ancient growth forest, along with the flora and fauna it nurtured became something that 23 years of conservative government was going to be held accountable.

These forest wars of 1979 culminated in the creation of national parks throughout New South Wales. 

It was a time of extraordinary social change that challenged post-war philosophies and beliefs, and established almost a hundred communes   –  of which more than half still exist  –  because these people understood nature as a living, breathing ecosystem and not a resource for exploitation. 

For that alone, Australians need to be eternally grateful: and acutely aware that the spirit of dissent is under threat. 

Since 2010, environmental activism has been slammed by government legislation in a way that would have had the Terania Creek protesters (after which the falls are named) incarcerated. Instead, an alliance of nature conservationists and the (now unrecognisable) Labor Party was formed.

The tactics of activists that lead to blockades, and the reactions of loggers and police were all done on the fly. Everything that was conceived and initiated in this trigger event progressed to a much greater environmental movement. Protection of Tasmania’s Franklin River and North Queensland’s Daintree Rainforest may never have happened were it not for the Terania and Mount Nardi blockades. 

With a climate in crisis, the loss of biodiversity, native birds and animals facing endangerment and extinction and industries continuing to destroy our forests and oceans, it’s the telling and retelling of this important story of critical mass that began in Nimbin, that needs to be the focus of content creators. Be decidedly more than young, dumb and vacuously full of matcha lattes, soft onion boils and idiotic dental hacks. Stand out. Stand up for what’s worthwhile. The threads of Nimbin are a tapestry that’s so much more than its clothes and smoke wisps from joints in the street. Those are symbols of independence: hard won by those with adventurous, spirited hearts and the guts to take on the fight.  

Stories have to be held and handled and passed around. Otherwise they pass away; like everything forgotten and neglected. Without them, we have no idea who we are, where we came from and why we’re here. 

Nimbin knows. Therein lies true influence.

People worry all the time about being happy. It didn’t just happen today, this generation. So do not blame social media. That pervasive feeling have been nagging at us a longer time than we care to admit. Instead of working towards it, we reflect, we question and rationalise. And we compensate. Should it be any different for our children? It is not just the kids, but most adults are also hooked on social media. They can’t put their phones down. They use them for work meetings, for buying things, for keeping in touch with their old school buddies. If you, who have been born of a different generation are using these tools for your own day to day, what do you suggest children who are born of this time, use?  

The problem was always there. It’s not pretty. And before social media we didn’t want to address it. So, it stayed hidden. Do not blame social media for pointing it out. Social media platforms exposes and sometimes zeroes on user personality. The substance of a person you would usually not have a clue to, can now be hinted at by their social media accounts. Narcissism, love of cats, political inclinations; it’s right there.

Social media has been blamed for everything including mental health issues. A disparity of income can affect available alternatives. Sports (equipment), community sponsored drama, school music recitals. When these children are all tuckered out from sports, or thinking and creating costumes and props for plays, there is less time worrying about what they are missing out on. They sleep, rest, they collaborate, they communicate with their peers. They get to worry about different things and not just how many likes their new profile picture have.

Roosevelt said ‘Comparison is the thief of joy.’ Well, sure. That is when you are looking from a place of where we (in our opinion) fall short of. But you can’t be less at everything. The body image dissatisfaction is a tired argument, it has been plaguing women since the 80’s and magazine subscription was a thing.  Like most of the problems being blamed on social media, this is an old one. It is hardly fair to put the blame on a newcomer just because it is convenient. This is not to say that the children should be given unlimited access to social media. It does mean that they should be given a chance to explore it. The same way we explored newspapers for news, classifieds, garage sales and even personal ads.

This is their world and their time. What we must do is try to help them along using tools we already know (responsible posting/sharing, security measures) to hone theirs. Guide them in the safe and proper use of social media.

It is very rare that you would not see people on their smart phones when one goes out. They would usually be on their many social media accounts. Facebook, Instagram, and the list goes on. They could not put their phones down. Not when eating, not even while in a conversation. It is the constant fear of missing out (FOMO) that has put social media as a new power.

It is both good and bad, being in these platforms. There is an information overload, that is neither bad or good in its own. What we do with it is what makes it either. Social media opens more avenues for friendship but it does so for bullying, too. These networks are invaluable to any marketing company. For most companies social media marketing is as important if not far more important, than any other marketing forums. This is also true to any group or affiliation a student belongs to. They can reach more people, like-minded or otherwise. There are more opportunities for interaction and learning through social media

Video conversations become animated and can show a person around a location or share experiences that one might not want to actually try. Communicating with peers and teachers, also groups of same interests becomes instant for sharing information, rectifying mistakes and just touching base.

Using social media as a new power is evident in its ability to inform and influence a much broader audience, of different generations, to agree or think over facts, realities and opinions effectively and all at once. The use of instructional videos on these platforms can teach and enhance skills on their own. Immediate news of things happening elsewhere. Earthquakes, floods, good or bad, people can just go live and show whoever is interested in what is currently happening. 

Like anything new, some people are opposed to things changing. Preferring for how things were before. But if that thinking succeeded at all before, we never would have cars or airplanes.

An unspoken conflict exists between teens/preteens and adults. About having, using and managing smartphones and gadgets. Smartphone use is prevalent in young people’s lives. Adults being adults, who can sometimes be worrywarts, tend to search everything wrong with the new generation and their daily weapon of choice, the smartphone. They go about their business unaware of the dangers of the digital age.

Because youngsters have nothing to compare their lives without smartphones and all these social media platforms, most of them see nothing wrong with social media or the technology that they are now experiencing. To them it is a speedy way to connect, communicate and share. A novel way to express themselves. It is life as they know it.

Cyber bullying – the anonymity behind a keypad, those whispers, unflattering photos and threatening messages that will incite fear and embarrassment to our children. Without guidance and a strong support system, they will never tell and never be open enough to stand up to it.

Cyber flashing – as if bullying was not enough, this is another bad side of technology. The immediate and oftentimes anonymous unsolicited images can be sent through bluetooth or airdrop. Or the falsehood of befriending on apps using a different picture as profile, and receiving a call from this cyber flasher. The anonymity makes it even scarier for the victim. It could be enough to trigger anxiety issues and a general feeling of dread.

There has never been a need for parental guidance in the use of smartphones because until recently there has not been reports of this kind. Taking away smartphones may not be the right answer. Guidance and preparation, not to mention seeking out new solutions, have to be foremost in facing these problems of our digital lives. Perhaps technology can also shed some light in figuring out how to limit this predicament.

For now what we can control is how we prepare and mold our children. Being involved in their daily life and opening their eyes to the risks and potential harm of ‘stranger danger’ of both online and in real life situations.

Selling direct on Instagram

There’s a new checkout beta program on Instagram in the US. This program will let users tag items which they could then sell directly to their followers and other people while viewing their posts and Stories.

Businesses and brands and now even individuals can use product tagging. Instagrammers welcome this move as it could prevent oft-repeated questions of what and where some featured products are available. Followers can click on the tagged product for pertinent information. Thus, businesses products through influencers and individuals are now selling direct on Instagram.

This development has been made public by Facebook and Instagram as part of a transactional swing of the platforms. Instagram creators and a lot of daily users, including influencers are excited at the prospect and functionality of this program.

But commissions for the products are not yet offered for creators but it is something that might be available in the future.

A spokesperson said, “People are already shopping from creators by asking product questions in comments and Direct, with the ability to tag products, creators can provide the information their followers are looking for and get back to expressing themselves and sharing what’s on their mind, which will make their followers happy too.”

  • You should already have completed set up for shopping on Instagram before you can enable it from your Instagram App.

Enable Business Settings for Shopping on Instagram

To enable the ability to feature products from the Instagram App:

  1. Go to your profile and tap
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Business.
  4. Tap Shopping. Note: The option to tap Shopping is only available to accounts that have been approved for shopping on Instagram.
  5. Tap Continue
  6. Select a product catalog to connect to your business profile.
  7. Tap Done.

If you don’t see Shopping, your account is probably still under review or it hasn’t been approved for shopping on Instagram. The review process can take up to a few days, but sometimes we may need to review the account in more detail, which can take longer.

Last week CHRISTINE BUHAY caught up with Glen Fredericks, a graphic/web designer, video editor and social media manager extraordinaire. He shared his views about social media management and social media platforms, particularly Facebook and Instagram. Here’s what he said …

A Bit about Him

I work at Barbeques Galore Maitland, one of the franchises owned by the Newcombe family. I run the Facebook page Shushbbq and also the Instagram account @grillporn.

I have a Facebook drumming page called @drummingco.

I started working in the Barbeques Galore Maitland store just a little over four months ago. I do a variety of tasks, from graphic design, managing their mailing lists, video and photography. I work in the office. I don’t deal with customers at all.

What I am doing on the social media front is the Shushbbq Facebook page, which is for the “Shush! BBQ Book” that the family has self-published.

His Work

grillporn imageInstagram, as you’d already be aware, is a powerful tool, so we started the @grillporn profile – choosing “grill” because we are aiming at the American market and “porn” because of my experience with “drumporn” on Instagram.

Any word associated with porn on Instagram doesn’t come up with tsunami of pornographic results, but of people who have an intense interest in whatever the subject matter is. So be it #foodporn or #drumporn or even #cloudporn.

drummingco imageI started instagramming photos of drums back in August 2012 and then in January of 2013 I started the Facebook Page @drummingco which is now up to 6,000+ Likes. The hardest thing has been to drag those Instagram followers over to Facebook. It would appear that your numbers are skewed towards Instagram as well.

I had a Facebook Event called Hug A Drummer Day. I announced it two months prior. I wasn’t going to make a Facebook Page about it, but with the publicity being generated (it was in the Newcastle Herald and I was interviewed on 2HD) I figured I better in case someone squatted on the www.facebook.com/hugadrummer and capitalised on my hard work. Within a week, it has grown to 2,500 Likes with 6,000+ joining the event (I anticipated 5,000 so I’m quite happy with the result).

So I totally have the whole drum industry side of things covered. And while it is a hobby, it’s something that has opened up opportunities for me. It certainly didn’t hurt in helping me get this job. In addition to my graphic design, web design and video editing capabilities.

I also took over the reins of the Barbeques Galore Maitland Facebook Page. After a week the people “talking about this” went from 100 or so, up to 3,000. I don’t expect it to stay that high, if it hovers around 25% of the Likes I’ll be happy. I’m doing about 4 posts per day (I’m only doing 1 a day on Shush BBQ) so it gives me plenty of opportunity to engage with the audience.

The Differences between Instagram and Facebook

Instagram allows you to find and connect with an audience in a way that Facebook doesn’t. With Facebook you’re pretty much waiting for people to find you. On the other hand, with Instagram you can find people who have the same interest as you simply by doing a hashtag search. Instagram’s strength is in its ability to connect with people, and for Facebook Pages it’s the sharing.

toilet drum for drummingcoJust a couple of weeks back I took a photo of my toilet and posted it on a new Facebook Page I made and that photo has had over half a million views possibly making it Australia’s most famous toilet on the internet?

The funny thing is the practice pad, the stand and the bass pad were all pulled out of the dumpster at the back of the @thedrumshop last year. Those things went from being thrown out and heading to landfill to becoming loved and shared over 5,500 times.

That’s a bit of background on me and what my aims are with the Facebook and Instagram accounts I am running for the business. I am starting from scratch with the barbeque industry, but as I have found with the drum industry, networking with other pages certainly helps.

It’s easy to “manage” a Facebook business page – any mug can do it – but for small businesses, what really matters is “developing” their business page.

Most of the time when business owners tell me “we’re managing our business page in-house”, part of me grimaces at the thought of their in-house “social media manager” happily whiling away the hours on Facebook, doing the very occasional post to “prove” their worth, and then whiling away a few more hours on Facebook.

I don’t see too many jobs posted on Seek.com.au or other recruitment sites for a social media developer, and yet this simple waywardness in semantics can make a significant difference to a company’s success or failure on social media.

While social media management is important – you need that daily presence even if you’re quite a small business – in fact more so – what ay small to medium business needs more than ever is social media development.

And a Facebook business page is – despite the stats showing 11 million Australians on Facebook – where social media “development” is the most difficult of all.

Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and even Google+, indeed even LinkedIn, are far more open platforms where people are often there because they are more open and curious about “the world of social media” – so a full-scale development process can reap massive rewards.

But Facebook pages – they’re a dog.

Like owning a dog, you’ll get some love back from them – but return on investment?

Like a dog, you’ll need to feed them once or twice a day.

Like a dog, you need to take them for a daily walk around the neighbourhood so they can piss on other people’s posts.

And most gallingly, like a dog, Facebook has got your business page cooped up behind four walls – stuck in suburban solitary – for most of the day.

Your Facebook page is stuck in backyard confinement – you can’t directly approach your Facebook fans, etc etc – so many things a Facebook fan is not permitted to do.

Why would a person need spray foam? Is it environmentally safe? Is it safe to human health? How long does it last? Is a customer searching for it for home insulation or is it a business? What business applications is it most required for? A winery? A warehouse? A social media management company? Who the hell insulates their sheds? Which is better of you can only afford one – wall insulation or underfloor insulation?

One of the things that we strive to do, and is often a far more painstaking process for clients to grapple with as they know their own businesses backwards, is to as far as possible comprehend what a client’s customers needs truly are. To do this we have to try and understand what it is our clients’ do, why they do it and what the end outcomes are for customers of their business. So when approached by Ecofoam about starting a campaign with them we got to work on finding out as much about their customers as possible – within privacy limits of course!

Not only did we learn we’d be targeting a campaign that focused on residential, commercial and industrial clients, which is a broad range that needs to be approached in many ways, we  conducted lengthy interviews with staff from Ecofoam in order to learn about the science behind spray foam and about its practical applications in the real world so we could talk about it confidently and run the marketing from an angle which we genuinely understood.

Insulation is a competitive market in Australia, every company worth their salt is truly having a go at dominating the market, whether online or otherwise. When coming up against this kind of competition it’s important to go on the offensive and to keep it sustained long term otherwise there will be no increase and possibly even a drop in rankings, just due to sheer competition.

This program has been one of our hottest. Simply because we had to allocate some of our best staff to internet battles to raise rankings. We threw some great minds at it and came up with a multi-pronged program which required staff members to write hundreds of hours of fresh content for a service wide information update and release.

This was definitely a case of bringing out the big guns!

The Short Story:

  1. We took a strong approach to learning about Ecofoam’s business in order to fully understand our clients’ needs.
  2. We spent time developing a stronger frame than usual to support our efforts in growing their business presence online.
  3. Staff created hundreds of hours worth of new content in order to develop fresh ideas for the campaign.
  4. This massive influx of fresh content gave Ecofoam an edge in the market against much larger players to maintain and improve upon rankings.
